Is your production still similar now or has it gone up. i have no doubt people can top these figures but i just pulled up last months herd test figures and there were are handful of animals at 40lt with almost 6% fat. This is on grass and grain in the dairy. So i agree you can get high test with Holsteins without crossbreeding. But it will probably be higher if you do, depending on the breed. nondisclosed_email@example.com (bazza20)Mon, 02 Aug 2010 04:53:08 +0000 Re: 5%fat -the genetics(finished)https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p416624,from=rss#post416624https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p416624,from=rss#post416624thought I'd pull this up so all the cross breeders out there can see that there are holstein bloodlines with high butterfat %nondisclosed_email@example.com (foxleigh)Mon, 02 Aug 2010 02:28:49 +0000 Re: 5%fat -the genetics(finished)https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9573,from=rss#post9573https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9573,from=rss#post9573plan to do a post on diet, but principally homegrown forages and silages.nondisclosed_email@example.com (foxleigh)Sat, 01 May 2004 08:37:31 +0000 Re: 5%fat -the genetics(finished)https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9572,from=rss#post9572https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9572,from=rss#post9572If your completed lactation figures are on a feeding regime of pastures and supplementary meal (concentrates)as we are here, they would be the envy of all my clients. Can I suggest a reason for this might be that many of the producers here have never seen a bulk 5% bf test. Partly in wonderment, they don't quite know what to say. For some, 5% bf might cause problems with quota or supplier. Can I ask (as you are a seasonal producer) what the rolling average bf is? I for one have never had a bulk bf test over 4.2%, although I am not as seasonal as you. (I'm sure my father probably had when he was milking shorthorns and friesians in the old days). nondisclosed_email@example.com (FiringOnAllFour)Sat, 24 Apr 2004 18:49:55 +0000 Re: 5%fat -the geneticshttps://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9569,from=rss#post9569https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9569,from=rss#post9569Most interesting. However, udders that have too strong a ligament tend to cause the rear teats to point inwards, especially if they are placed towards the insides of the quarters. Problems therefore arise when teats touch, or when the bottom of the quarters bulge downwards to the same level as the teats. The machines need to see fairly distinct teat structures at the lowest point of the udder for speed of attachment. For efficiency's sake, I must breed udders that are simple to attach to. So in my case, the ligament only has to be as strong as it needs to be to hold the udder on for 5,6,7 or 8 lactations if I'm lucky. Bellwood, for example, has done our udders no harm whatsoever. The ligaments are still strong enough and depth is not causing any problem. His fore attachment doesn't seem to worsen with time, although he needs more height at the rear. So this is not to say that I will breed for weak ligaments, only for maintenance. And lets be honest, any bull worth his salt today has a good ligament. I have too many other criteria to make progress on. nondisclosed_email@example.com (FiringOnAllFour)Fri, 23 Apr 2004 17:10:59 +0000 Re: 5%fat -the geneticshttps://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9567,from=rss#post9567https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9567,from=rss#post9567not when you are milking with the robotnondisclosed_email@example.com (Gerbrich)Fri, 23 Apr 2004 15:58:05 +0000 Re: 5%fat -the geneticshttps://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9566,from=rss#post9566https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9566,from=rss#post9566FOA4, That is the second time you have expressed your dislike of extremely strong ligaments. I take a similar approach. I start by ruling out bulls with unsuitable udders (i.e. close or wide teats, short teats and excessively strong ligaments), followed by milkspeed followed by legs and feet and SCC. Then I pick the most kgs of milk solids, and narrow down to the most positive deviations. nondisclosed_email@example.com (FiringOnAllFour)Fri, 23 Apr 2004 12:31:17 +0000 Re: 5%fat -the geneticshttps://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9564,from=rss#post9564https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p9564,from=rss#post9564type and temprement determine beef sire use! have only used bulls with positive % in the past 9 years or from cowfamilies with good components if herd bull or progeny test.
