5%fat -the genetics(finished)

The herd was purchased as part of a WIWO deal in about 1982.At that point in time it was a linmack x brabazon nz base with some cow families being appendixed up (base breed unknown). Two animals were added in the late 80s both from andeswood/andes.A quality who had 7 or so calves, the first being a bull and the last being an inspiration bull(QI).She tested very high.
The other was a Lass, who was flushed twice, once to the qualitys first bull and once to tempo. Both these animals were riddled with linmack blood.
these fulls resulted in a bull QKL and a heifer QK Lass and a bull TL and tempo lass 1 to 3
QK Lass was an exceptional producer who did over 70,000l lifetime with ave of 5.3 fat and 3.6 prt.Her best acheivement was 3 10,000l lacts in a row calving within 12 months each time and testing to 5.8% fat and 3.8 prt.(this was when we was on tmr mix 10 years ago)
Her sons by counsellor(LC), inspiration(Laddie),quietcove elevation artist(AL) were used across the herd.
Bear in mind that some animals would have 4 crosses of lass bulls in their pedigree.
For the past 9 years we have selected bulls on % test as we changed states and moved from a tmr liquid milk situation to a pasture based manufactoring base and are now pasture based liquid milk.
We calve oct to dec and febuary to june with only 1/5 of the herd calving in spring(oct/dec).
so the april herd test was 18.1l @5.2% and 3.5%.and I have listed animals tests on lactations in progress ie. ave test for current lact by sire

So do you select sires on +ve%bf and prot.?

And do you breed low bf cows to beef?

type and temprement determine beef sire use!
have only used bulls with positive % in the past 9 years or from cowfamilies with good components if herd bull or progeny test. Generally look for 4 or better fat and reasonible milk.should sway that bulls get picked on pedigree and type and then if positive deviations then get used.

Yes. I take a similar approach. I start by ruling out bulls with unsuitable udders (i.e. close or wide teats, short teats and excessively strong ligaments), followed by milkspeed followed by legs and feet and SCC. Then I pick the most kgs of milk solids, and narrow down to the most positive deviations.

FOA4,

That is the second time you have expressed your dislike of extremely strong ligaments. Might I enquire why?

I believe Udder support/ligament to be the single most important udder trait!!

Re: 5%fat -the genetics

Our herd has a strong ligament tendency on the whole, from years of udder breeding. However, udders that have too strong a ligament tend to cause the rear teats to point inwards, especially if they are placed towards the insides of the quarters. Problems therefore arise when teats touch, or when the bottom of the quarters bulge downwards to the same level as the teats. The machines need to see fairly distinct teat structures at the lowest point of the udder for speed of attachment. For efficiency's sake, I must breed udders that are simple to attach to.

So in my case, the ligament only has to be as strong as it needs to be to hold the udder on for 5,6,7 or 8 lactations if I'm lucky. Bellwood, for example, has done our udders no harm whatsoever. The ligaments are still strong enough and depth is not causing any problem. His fore attachment doesn't seem to worsen with time, although he needs more height at the rear.

So this is not to say that I will breed for weak ligaments, only for maintenance. And lets be honest, any bull worth his salt today has a good ligament. I have too many other criteria to make progress on.

Most interesting. I have two cows that I have to cross the back inflations to keep the milker on them. Don't think the robot could milk them.

You seem to be getting very sparse replies Foxleigh.

Can I suggest a reason for this might be that many of the producers here have never seen a bulk 5% bf test. Partly in wonderment, they don't quite know what to say. For some, 5% bf might cause problems with quota or supplier.

Can I ask (as you are a seasonal producer) what the rolling average bf is?

I for one have never had a bulk bf test over 4.2%, although I am not as seasonal as you. (I'm sure my father probably had when he was milking shorthorns and friesians in the old days).

Re: 5%fat -the genetics(finished)

the rolling average on herd test so far is a)lacts in progress 208 days 4447 145 3.3% and 202 4.5% on 136 head
and
12 month average of 104 finished lactations being 6521` 214 3.3% and 283 4.3%
Im sure the factory figures are different again as this month averaging a 4.7.
