Re: POLLED HOLSTEINS

I found something on a crossbreeding site in reference to the Norweigan Red breed. http://www.dairycrossbreeding.com/?p=331

Currently 60% of Norwegian Red calves are polled. The aim of the breed is to be a polled breed in 15-20 years. I think it's going to take a much, much longer time till Holsteins are polled.

It's probably been said on this thread. But the smartest thing they did to promote Polled Genetics is to combine it with the red gene.

The combination of red and polled actually drives me nuts. In general I don't care for red bulls as they almost always have lower production proofs. So why are the polled bulls, which really should be aimed at the commercial marketplace, almost always at the very least red carriers? I selfishly want every decent polled female being mated to the very top of the genomic bull pool so that polled animals can work on making up ground. This way within a couple generations we can hopefully have several decent polled bulls out of different breeding combinations so that polled breeders can then start to work on creating a decent homozygous polled bull.

Trying to breed Polled and red together is difficult. The non-red polled bulls are coming. We know of Polled Man-o-mans, Garrets, Polled from Planet Dams etc. All with out Lawnboy in pedigree.

Re: POLLED HOLSTEINS

Maybe could be interesting to know actual list of available homozygous polled holstein bulls. At this moment I know these bulls: Leonardo (Goepel Genetik - Lawn Boy x Dieter),Ostretin Magua (Natural - Lawn Boy x Ottawa),Lewitan (Masterrind - Lawn Boy x Perk RED, Burket Falls Premium PP (Excalibur Sires - Lawn Boy x Paradox), Logo (GGI- Lypoll x Marmax), Burket-Falls Poll Pledge (Burket-Falls - Special x Rudoplh), Burket-Falls Dominant PP-Red (Burket-Falls - Pledge x Party RED).
Concerning older bulls it was Hickorymea Ottawa (ABS - Tripod x Bellwood) and David (Goepel Genetik - Darwin RED x Priority RED). Do you know more bulls?

Re: POLLED HOLSTEINS

Venture Proxy PP Red is available in US only as he has just been collected over the last month. He is Leucosis postive so his semen cannot go to Canada or EU. He will be eligable for export to other countries that accept semen from Leucosis positive bulls (e.g. Australia, New Zealand, South America etc.)

Re: POLLED HOLSTEINS

I believe there are at least six Polled bulls over 2000 GTPI with semen available, with more on the horizon. 4 years ago these bulls would have been able to enter AI as horned bulls.

Lawn Boy is in the top 50 of all 99% rel bulls for TPI.

I know of at least 5 respectable homozygous (100 % polled) bulls in AI currently

Semen is currently available from polled sons of Shottle, Bolton, Goldwyn, O-man, Bronco, Man-o-man, Baxter, etc.

Huge sacrifices do not have to be made to create a polled herd
