Re: WORST BULL EVER USED?

Funny u should mention Jolt as poor temperment. We only got 1 EX Jolt we bought from Bigbridge and as a wee calve she was real friendly but mum photographd her and scared her-from then on shes a complete psycho at times (fine most of the time, maniac when worked with). Clippin her feet today and she was swingin the head tryina get us, kickin like a donkey but in the end she caught the gate and dislocated my bro's arm badly! So thats our experience with him-shes a nutter!!! J

Witness in defence of Jolt.
I have had 5 Jolts milking, 3 of which are from a family that can be head strong, they all are calm and laid back.

Just noticed that a negative subject like worst bull gets the most number of views(see home page).
Does that reflect the society in which we live or are we seeking reassurance that we are not the only ones with bulls that let us down!!

Have 2 agree with alan a on the classifier asking about temperament(and milking speed), they sometimes remember to ask other times they must just put an average score, not particularly accurate! emoticon
Our jolts can be fidgety but not necesarily nasty or evil, we have two dante heifers milking, both very good heifers , but both very dangerous, evil and nasty dont even cover it! MOOH

Re: WORST BULL EVER USED?

I can agree that the Dante's are difficult. But it's in his blood. And perhaps, they are not nearly as nasty as his full brother's daughters (DURHAM). Beware in Europe and Canada! All the Holstein International articles bragging about Durham have left out one big piece of the puzzle.......their temperament. I worked with over a dozen Durham two year olds, including some high profile ones, and they are all miserable to work with. I've also run into many at different sales and shows, and the same end result. They are difficult to milk, hard to handle, kicky when you clip them, and all-around, a pain in the butt. In my recent memory, his daughters are quite handily the worst to work with as a group. Durham embryos and Durham sons are very hot and popular overseas, but be forewarned that they do have very bad attitudes. He has many positive things he is passing on, but the temperament of his daughters is one thing that is definitely being kept quiet for marketing reasons.

Durham's are exceedingly dangerous. We love to milk them, look at them, watch them eat, look at their calves, and do any thing that does not involve serious handling. If you try to sort them, dehorn them, or breed them without adequate restraint they will go ballistic. They are also very protective of their calves. They don't kick in the parlor for the most part yet. But they are evil cattle. He is the worst bull in the whole Select Sires directory for dispostition at a score of 3. Taken all this into consideration, I still use him. They may be a total pain, but they are quickly becoming boss type brood cows. Their daughters are great looking as well.

shilt79 said the temper is in the blood of dante and durham.

Are we talking on the male or female side of the pedigree?

Re: WORST BULL EVER USED?

Big Bird,

I think that the nastiness of the Durhams and Dantes is to blame probably equally on maternal and paternal blood. Elton was a Bell son. And ask anyone who milked Bells, and they would tell you that they were miserable little creatures. And having worked with other Dellias (and I own one), as well as other Dellia sons and grandsons, and I would say they have a little more fire in them than I care for. Plus, Dellia's mother was a Bell, so that's another shot of evil.

I read that Buckeye still uses him, despite attitude. More power to him. Myself, I have chosen not to. I don't like to work with cows that are that difficult, and there are plenty of other bulls out there to use. And temperament is quite heritable, so I'm not going to take the chance. As well, I don't care for CVM. And I think that at this point, Durham daughters are flooding the market, and I'd like to do something different.

I know I am a gluton for punishment. HELP I have freestalls and headlocks, and a herringbone parlor, it can be pretty much hands off if I want it to be. As long as I leave the Durhams alone, we get along pretty well. When I need to breed one I just set the headlocks for all the cows and wait until she gets caught. I am milking 15 of them, some are worse than others but if you know they are headcases and handle them with care then the trade off is definately worth it. I have noticed that as three year olds they have become the top of the cow heirarchy in the barn. Normally that is reserved for the big old cows. They don't back down from older cows.
