Mascot didn't work in confinement systems,I truly believe he is a different bull on grass based systems (I take it your cows are on pasture for some time of the year Mark, correct me if I am wrong) Australian Genetics actually list bulls that are Mascot free, he has been such a succesful sire of sons over there (easy now Foxleigh, easy . . .)Magley and Knockout (both Mascots)sons are fighting it out at the top of the New Zealand BW listings. Marker is tied for first spot with Wade on the active BVI list in South Africa. Maybe he just works in the southern hemisphere!

How about Aaron,Lee and dare I say it..Principal!

Aaron - prety good choice

Lee - not sure about the laurie sheik's for this job because the maternal classifications aren't that high. I would go with Lee, though, because of the cross with the Roxies.

Principal - I milk Pamelas, I rate them highly, but I can't get excited about Principal. His maternal brother, Crichel Premium, by Prelude may be a better choice. Also have some Crichel Rolands, but there isn't likely to be any more of that about.

Boss Iron may be a possibility.

Henkeseen Hillcrest has one of the highest classified pedigrees about, but having used a little Marvellous, I would take a lot of convincing on this one.

Re: BROOD COW SIRES??

Bootmaker is the bull I would most like to go and 'fetch' from the past. As herd sizes grow we need more and more of what he bred, his daughters lasted forever and he is almost lost to the breed. He had many sons in South Africa their daughters also lasted forever. Even had a double Bootmaker proven here, bull had an inspired name International Bootmaker Bootmaker, his daughters were medium sized black cows, that had to be shot, run over or hit by lightening to die. Other often unsung hero is Chairman as Canuk said. Love to see him in a pedigree. Leadman as well. Don't mind Secret in the background either (small and frail I know, but they had juice, good udders and again they lasted) A lot of Ito and Dusters longevity must come from the Secret in their pedigree.

The more I see from Aaron the less impressed I am. (sorry Alta). I don't think he is a cow-maker.

And why not use a son or a brother to the brood cow to get the genes firmly fixed? Used to be common practice...

Re: BROOD COW SIRES??

Im, actually waiting for that other aussie , the AI salesman rugby expert, to get up all of us.
mascot first hit australia at $300 a straw! his first proof was almost exclusively from daus from the best cows with the best management and best feeding!!!naturally he was number 1.And in australia to get a bull into AI his dam has to be by a very high ABV sire hence the large number of shotime bull dams.
magely is actually an et from the usa.So I get a kick out of the nz AI cataqlogues that are more us bred than anything else.
I actually said to bill stolzfus not so long ago that I'd love to find a cow to flush to bootmaker but it hasnt happened yet!!
chairman ....well he was sold here for $90 a straw as an udder improver.
Im afraid that the ones I put the cups on in the midwest were anything but....Having put the cups on many a shotime I can verify that chairmans udder faults follow thru with the grandsons. However I will agree that chairman did put that extreme dairy silky skin on an animal and that is also transmitted on.

I may of misled you smous,I do not like Mascot at all.His legs and feet did not suit our system (grazing 5 months, cubicles 7 months). This particular Mascot is a freak, she has fantastic legs and feet which I credit to her Starbuck dam.
Funnily enough we also owned Knockout's full sister-her legs left a lot to be desired-she was VG and bred a VG 87 daughter by Fortmation.
The Markers and Aarons seemed to have escaped the Mascot legs.

Gerbrich, we only have 3 Aarons but they are all VG and are all cow makers!

I've seen some really nice Aarons (probably the nicest two were from a Bellwood and a Jabot). But you need to use him on a cow with plenty of body and a good rump structure.

And have to disagree with you on Marker, they also come with Mascot legs.

(PS Leilani B was probably the best full sister for L&F).

If you read what Simon said to start this thread we are talking outstanding cows here.

Have been trawling the HUK website.
What about Pinehurst Elation or Pinehurst Crown Prince.

Seems to me in the UK places to look could include Semen World or Red Rose Genetics.
