Re: MANAT

I think Manat is as good as he could be considering his pedigree. When ever a bull comes out with a great proof that does not have the genetics to match the great proof then this is the warning sign because proofs can change dramaticly in a short time but the genetics stay the same.
If you have an average Bell Rex in your herd would u cross her with Mandel to gain great results!.No because them two bulls put together create crap type and u will not gain much of anything except production witch is no good if u do not have the type to produce it.On most first crop bulls i do not use the proof much at all.If i was to use Manat as a flush sire i would have thought would Mandel or Bell Rex work on the animal i am working with.If not then i would not use him on that cow even if his proof said i should. This to me is a good way of avoiding hidden faults before they come to the surface just like Manat and many like him!.

Re: MANAT

I truly believe that the genetic base of the cows he was first proven on was absolutely ideal and that his proof on that genetic base compared to other bulls probably was spot on however it could and would prove disasterous used away from these bloodlines.

Foxleigh - I totally agree, and can not for the life of me understand how are AIs didn't see this comming. Too busy looking at the paper in front of them, instead of the paper behind, that paper.

Re: MANAT

Most of the Manats I have seen here in Germany are small, without any strength or body depth. Many of them have high pins and a poor bone quality. None of the breeders I talked to that own (owned) Manats will use him again and most of them were complaining about very low udder health.I must admit that their udders -especially their rear udders- look nice, but this can`t be the reason for choosing a bull with so many failures!

Re: MANAT

I've seen milking Manats in Holland. Most had decent udders but they were consistently high of their pins and lacked style. Compared to herdmates, they were nothing special.

I think Astre has been one of the most influencial sires in the world, look at all his sons on the market! Also, if you go to many top herds in the country they still have Astre's milking when the next generation Storms have gone. They're low on fat but look at his type score on the Holstein UK website and number of daughters, that says it all!

He's still available too at a reasonable price, a pretty safe bet!

Do you get free foot trimming vouchers with Astre semen? I have yet to become a Manat fan, but saw an awesome one yesterday, completely different cut, but backed by Papooses
