posticon Survey of marketing arrangements of dairy farmers

I am a lecturer in farm management at Newcastle University with an interest in milk prices. We have devised an on-line survey of UK dairy farmers to identify linkages between farmer's attitudes and behaviour in milk marketing and their milk price. In particular, we wish to know whether a knowledge of the end-use of their milk helps them achieve a higher farm gate price.
If there are links, then this survey would be able to help farmers improve their farmgate price at little or no extra cost simply by being better informed. If knowing this would be of use to you, and interests you, please access and complete our survey, which can be found at

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=kY7VsLSf2r6Va9T9trgTWw_3d_3d

The survey allows you to indicate if you wish to be sent a copy of the findings. The more who take part the more useful will be our findings.

Thanks for your support

I should have said that this survey is not supported by any industry funding: is forms part of a Summer Vacationship studentship awarded to Sarah Hauser by Newcastle University. I do hope as many dairy farmers as possible will complete the survey.

Quite a few have read the message about the survey, and we now have about 90 completed surveys: to be brutally honest we need more. We had hoped for upto 200! Does anybody have any suggestions as to how we can disseminate the survey to a wider audience (it can already be accessed from the NFU, RABDF and Holstein UK web sites)

I think you are doing quite well to get 90 dairy farmers to fill in an online survey!
Keep bumping this topic as a lot of people only log on occasionally.

Try this site it should pick you up a few more. British farming forum

I filled out the survey and have a small gripe with it. In some cases, we are asked to list our responses in order of preference. The survey demands that we rank three answers. For more than one of those questions, I was forced into making a second and third choice in order to proceed with the next question, when I didn't actually feel that more than one or two selections were appropriate. In one question, my first choice was completely incompatible with the other choices on the list.

I would agree with that.

To FiringOnAllFour and MarkDay
thanks for this feedback. I agree this is a problem, but it is too late to alter it now. This is the first survey we I have done using SurveyMonkey and I believe there is scope to ask for a maximum of three ranked answers rather than insisting on three - if this is correct then the fault is ours.
As for 90+ responses being good for an on-line survey of dairy farmers. I was under the impression that many dairy farmers received detials of their monthly milk cheque "down the wire", which implies they are fully kitted out for internet access. Is this correct? If it is, then I would expect a high proportion to have access to the survey - whether they have the time and interest to complete it is another matter of course.
Thanks for your comments, all others are very welcome.

Interesting point about farmers using BACS and receiving the statement online.

I am a little embarrassed to say that, out of about 2400 United Dairy Farmer member-producers, it is reported that only 400 so far have availed of BACS.

I take that back, its not really embarrassing. It just really shows the age bracket that the majority of our members fall into.

Personally I don't understand how any dairy farmer has time to potter down to the bank with a cheque - never mind the interest incurred whilst the cheque clears.

How could I bring the survey of dairy farmers to the attention of the 400 of so United Dairy Farmers who receive their monthly cheques by BACS? Do you know if there is somebody I can contact to ask if they will use their database to spread the word (I guess this is exactly the sort of "unwanted" emails that puts farmers off signing up for such a database!)
