Re: Can/US Ayrshire Genomics
I'm waiting for the results on a Foske son that could be collected right away. His sample is currently being reprocessed, not sure why. Hopefully it's because he came out so high that they need to re test him

Re: Can/US Ayrshire Genomics
Heh. Just my luck. The polled bull calf died on me. He was healthy before this. Must be the curse of the genomic test.
Oh well, I think I've just scratched the surface on testing my Reds, I'm hoping I can get some up into the $5-600 net merit range.

Re: Can/US Ayrshire Genomics
Dang, bummer! It's not just a lost calf but also the generations of selective matings to get to him.

On a Tangvoll bull (the one that died), and Tangvoll heifer calf. Bull was $440 net merit, heifer $474. Both pretty similar otherwise, the heifer was a little better for everything.
Hoping the Foske bull comes in higher. Might have results on him this week.
Now that I know it works, I'm going to gather samples from more of my Reds. Not sure if I'll be able to try a 75% Red or not. But I'll definitely get samples from all that have been bred Red for three generations.

Re: Can/US Ayrshire Genomics
Very interesting results!
Very interested in your Tangvoll results ... I'll have to get some hair from my polled Tangvoll bull over to the US! We really like our best Tangvoll calves.
Jonny, out of interest of interest would you ever consider using British Reds after your experience with the Skyhigh bulls?
We're planning to send a few bulls (VR Cigar x VG87-3y R Facet, Polled Tangvoll x Ex92-2E R Bangkok, VR Cigar x EX93-4E Peterslund)to an export qualified stud.

The only Skyhigh bull I ended up with daughters from was Strolin. Not very good though I did end up with a couple halfway decent daughters. But that wouldn't turn me off from the concept of British bred Reds. We didn't have any genomic information at the time when I used Strolin, not sure whatever happened to him but it looks like Samson and Hartland are the better Skyhigh bulls and it looks like Accelerated has brought those two to the USA through their partnership with Cogent.
The pedigrees you list do look interesting, getting some genomics on them could make them more interesting
Thought maybe my Foske bull would have some results this week but haven't seen them yet. He's a troublemaker, crawling through the feed rail all the time and wandering around the farm and then not knowing how to get back in when a heifer is showing a heat.

Re: Can/US Ayrshire Genomics
The best of the Skyhigh bulls is Oscar, the current #1 bull in the UK (on the Shorthorn base, as they maintain the Scandinavian Red registry). This is him:
http://www.genusbreeding.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Skyhigh-Oscar-April-2015.pdf
Genus ABS did not retain him until his proof came out, but they do have a bank of semen. Unfortunately he does not have a type proof as his progeny are all unclassified crossbreds.
Some of the bulls we will be collecting from and would like to genomic test are Oscar's maternal brothers.
Unfortunately we lost Hartland's dam

Shame that the bull calf had to die!

Re: Can/US Ayrshire Genomics
Exceptional results Jonny! It'll be interesting to see how the V Foske comes out on type relative to the Tangvolls.
I can't wait to get some of ours tested on the US Ayrshire base after seeing these results!
